The 701 Champ has been an excellent rod for Ned rigs and light dropshot. It is very sensitive and has an excellent overall feel. If I was to only have 1 spinning rig it would be a 702 but this 701 shines in the applications I mentioned. It is light action so you’ll have to play any fish much over 4 lbs. It’s a fun rod and definitely has a place in my arsenal.

I just got my 701SF a few weeks ago and I am extremely impressed with the workmanship and the action of the rod. I bought it as a dedicated ned rig/light dropsot rod and so far it has blown my expectations out of the water. I am sure in the coming season that I will use this rod every trip throwing these two techniques. I also plan to throw tiny blade baits/spoon for whites when they are hitting. Overall, extremely happy with the rod. Don’t be afraid to go down to the 701 if you were wanting something for the light stuff. It has good backbone for such a light tip.

My 7′ L is always on my deck when I’m chasing big Lake St Clair smallmouth. For Neko, Ned or light drop shot rigs this is a great rod. It has an extra fast tip for the subtle bites but don’t let the light action fool you. This rod has backbone. If you want a finesse rod for big fish in open water with light line…this rod is a must.
